Is there a way to unlearn NLP?

nlp
myself asked:

I read a book about basic NLP and because of issues that I have, I've become preoccupied by the concepts I learned and I'm really distracted by it. I think it's a way to distance myself from people but that's not what I really want. Is there a way I can let go of what I learned because it seems that I turned it into a defense mechanism. I know…I'm screwed up.

Jennifer J :

NLP theory gives you a way to look at human behavior and interpret it. You now have a mental habit of doing this all the time and you wish you could stop. I don't blame you.

The way to do that is to learn a new way to interpret human behavior. I suggest the following - which is to look at human behavior through the filter of character strength…in other words, did this person exercise character strength or character weakness? This is a profoundly important way of thinking about human behavior, one that will serve you for the rest of your life.

Example…someone you know fails to return a favorite book that you have lent him. You ask for it, he promises to return it, but still neglects to do so. The character analysis…a lack of integrity, and pershaps dishonesty.

Typical character stengths: integrity, honesty, patience, persistence, loyalty, compassion, effort, courage, mental toughness. Under pressure of adversity, peoople who have character weaknesses usually take the "easy way out."

This way of looking at people will help you learn who you want to be friends with, who you can trust. It will help you understand and predict human behavior.

Do this for several weeks and you'll discover that this is your new perceptual filter for people…not that NLP mumbo jumbo. Good luck!
