Is hypnosis more effective than NLP?
Louise H asked:
Tom R - How can NLP be a form of hypnosis? Hypnosis relies on the induction of a trance state so the practioner can make 'suggestions' direct to the sub-conscious mind, whilst neuro linguistic programming works with full conscious awareness. Maybe effectiveness is the wrong word becasue undoubtedly both are effective. I probabaly meant which produces the speediest results.

i don't think so.
Paul McKenna was a hypnotist before he became a therapist who uses NLP.
so my reasoning is. if hypnosis is more effective then why would he even need to use NLP.
i think hypnosis helps but NLP alone would be enough./
i know alot more about NLP than therapeutic hypnosis and so hypnosis might be just as or more effective dependent on the skills of the therapist like therapists who use Erickson hypnosis techniques
// seen NLP "cure" phobias in less than an hr…. mine being one. how something could be emotionally crippling for yrs.and then disappear with NLP dissociation technique makes it seem like magic instead of therapy but i'm just happy to be functional. doesn't make sense that it was that easy to fix but it was.

Tom R :
Nlp is a form of hypnosis, one of about 800 products that were so special that they had to have a special name.
I find it interesting that the persons using the techniques are not able to admit what it is…..Hypnosis with different words.

No Trouble :
Hi Louise,
Tom is right, NLP is very similar to hypnosis. (and is thought by many to be hypnosis with a differnt name)

NLP and Hypnosis are just tools that are used to help someone achieve a particular goal in their life. And with all tools, there is a time and a place for each.
From the movies, and people that don't understand what hypnosis is, think of it a mind control (which is is NOT) but with that belief they are not likely to be receptive to something that would mean them giving up control (and any of the other misconceptions that they may have with hypnosis)
Time to pull out another tool, NLP. Since NLP doesn't have that "myth/illusion" of someone loosing control that hypnosis is often perceived to have; the techniques in most part, are very similar.
So in essence, it comes down to the client and what tool is going to work best for their particular goals. No different than it would be to using a hammer to remove a bolt; it's not the tool for the job, as a wrench would work better.
So is one more effective than the other? Absolutely, but it absolutely depends on the client that you are working with.
NLP'ers will say that NLP is better, while hypnotists will say hypnosis is better. While others will use a blending of both and state that this is best.
My opinion? Having access the proper tools is essential. I tend to use what ever will work best for my client, even if it is exclusively one or the other, or a blending of both, or even with other techniques.
